What Happened to Deepblu? A Timeline for COSMIQ+ Owners

If you own a COSMIQ or COSMIQ+, you probably already know that the Deepblu app no longer works as it once did.

What is harder to understand is how we got here.

There was no single day when COSMIQ+ suddenly stopped working. Instead, the ecosystem around it gradually disappeared: app development slowed, support became difficult to reach, Deepblu announced a server shutdown, account services stopped working, and eventually the mobile app disappeared from the major app stores.

I wanted to put that timeline in one place.

Before the Shutdown

COSMIQ+ was designed to work closely with the Deepblu mobile app.

Using Bluetooth, owners could synchronize dive logs, change computer settings and manage the device from a smartphone. Initial device registration was also connected to a Deepblu account.

The computer itself could dive independently, but a significant part of the user experience depended on Deepblu's software.

2022 — The Last Android Update

The last Android version I have been able to identify is Deepblu 3.4.18, released on April 28, 2022.

After that, there appears to have been no further Android development.

2023 — Problems Become Visible

During 2023, COSMIQ owners began reporting problems with the app and difficulty getting responses from Deepblu support.

Then, in December, the situation became official.

December 2023 — Deepblu Announces the Shutdown

Deepblu announced that it would take its servers offline.

The reason given was financial: server usage continued to grow, while subscription revenue was not enough to cover operating costs.

Users were advised to back up their data.

Deepblu also stated that linked devices such as COSMIQ could continue to be used independently.

Technically, the dive computer itself could still work.

The problem was everything around it.

2024 — Login and App Problems

By early 2024, COSMIQ owners were reporting that they could no longer sign in normally and that functions previously available through the app were becoming inaccessible.

Discussion from COSMIQ owners after the Deepblu shutdown

The Deepblu app also disappeared from normal app-store distribution.

I have not yet found reliable exact dates for when it was removed from Google Play and Apple's App Store, so I don't want to invent them.

Interestingly, Deepblu's old support documentation remains online today, including instructions for pairing and registering COSMIQ computers.

Owners Look for Alternatives

Fortunately, COSMIQ hardware did not become completely inaccessible.

Subsurface, the open-source dive-log application, supports downloading dives from COSMIQ devices and became an important alternative for owners after Deepblu disappeared.

But downloading dives solves only part of the problem.

The original Deepblu app could also communicate with the computer and change its settings.

2025 — Reverse Engineering Begins to Fill the Gap

Independent developers eventually started investigating the COSMIQ Bluetooth protocol itself.

In 2025, a COSMIQ+ Gen 5 owner publicly demonstrated an independent Web Bluetooth controller capable of communicating with the computer and changing a range of settings.

Deepblu app is dead — I reverse-engineered the COSMIQ+ Gen 5

That demonstrated something important:

the hardware was still capable — the missing part was software.

The Timeline So Far

April 2022 — Last Android Deepblu release I have identified: version 3.4.18.

2023 — Owners report app, compatibility and support problems.

December 2023 — Deepblu announces that its servers will be taken offline because operating costs can no longer be covered.

Early 2024 — Owners report login failures and loss of app-dependent functionality.

2024 — Deepblu disappears from normal app-store distribution; COSMIQ owners increasingly turn to alternatives such as Subsurface.

2025 — Independent reverse engineering demonstrates that COSMIQ+ can still be controlled without the original Deepblu app.

2026 — COSMIQ hardware is still being used, but its original software ecosystem is gone.

Some Questions Are Still Open

There are still details I would like to document more precisely:

  • When exactly were the Deepblu servers finally switched off?
  • When was the app removed from Google Play and the App Store?
  • Were there additional shutdown announcements?
  • What happened to firmware distribution?

If you have old Deepblu emails, screenshots, APKs, firmware files or other information from that period, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

Why Keep This Timeline?

Why I Started Building Tethys app

This one is simply an attempt to preserve the history of what happened to the ecosystem around COSMIQ+.

The computers didn't suddenly stop working.

The services around them disappeared piece by piece.

And years later, owners are still looking for ways to keep using the hardware they bought.
