Can You Still Use COSMIQ+ Without Deepblu?

If you own a COSMIQ+ and the Deepblu app no longer works for you, the first question is simple:

Can the dive computer still be used?

In most cases, yes. The COSMIQ+ hardware did not suddenly stop being a dive computer when Deepblu disappeared. If the device itself is charged, functioning and safe to dive with, it can still be used underwater.

But the full answer is more complicated, because COSMIQ+ was not only a standalone device. A large part of the experience depended on the Deepblu mobile app.

The hardware still works

The most important distinction is this:

Deepblu disappearing did not automatically make COSMIQ+ hardware useless.

The screen, buttons, sensors and dive modes are part of the device itself. Those things are not hosted on Deepblu servers. If your COSMIQ+ is physically working, it can still do what a dive computer does during a dive.

That matters because it changes the problem. The issue is not that every COSMIQ+ suddenly became dead hardware. The issue is that the original software around the hardware stopped being reliable.

What you lose without Deepblu

COSMIQ+ was designed to work closely with the Deepblu app. That app was the convenient way to manage the device from a phone.

Without a working Deepblu app and account system, several things become difficult:

  • syncing dives to a phone over Bluetooth;
  • keeping a simple mobile dive log;
  • changing device settings from the app;
  • using the original account-based Deepblu workflow;
  • setting up the device the way many owners originally expected.

So the honest answer is: COSMIQ+ can still be used as hardware, but the original phone companion experience is broken.

If you want the longer history of what happened to Deepblu, I keep a separate timeline here: What Happened to Deepblu? A Timeline for COSMIQ+ Owners.

Can you still download dive logs?

There are some options.

One important tool is Subsurface, the open-source dive log application. Subsurface supports downloading dives from COSMIQ devices, and it has become an important fallback for owners who want to preserve or manage their dive history.

That is useful, and I am glad it exists.

But it does not fully replace the original Deepblu phone workflow for everyone. Some owners still want a simple Android companion app focused specifically on COSMIQ+: connect the device, download dives, keep logs locally, export data and eventually manage settings without depending on the old Deepblu platform.

Where Tethys app fits

Tethys app is an independent Android companion app for COSMIQ+ dive computers.

I started building it because I wanted to keep using the COSMIQ+ I already owned. The hardware still worked. The missing part was software.

The goal is to restore the practical parts of the COSMIQ+ experience that disappeared with Deepblu:

  • Bluetooth communication with the dive computer;
  • downloading dive logs from COSMIQ+;
  • storing dive data locally on the phone;
  • exporting dive data;
  • building a local dive logbook;
  • eventually reading and changing device settings.

Tethys app is still in active development. At the moment, my main test device is a COSMIQ+ Gen 4. The app can already communicate with that device over Bluetooth, download dives and process the downloaded data locally.

Support for other COSMIQ+ generations still needs to be tested with real devices. I do not want to claim compatibility before it has actually been verified.

You can follow the current state of the project on the Project Status page.

What COSMIQ+ owners can do now

If you still own a COSMIQ or COSMIQ+, do not throw it away just because Deepblu is gone.

Useful things to check or save:

  • whether the device still powers on and enters Sync Mode;
  • the firmware version shown on the device, if available;
  • whether it is an original COSMIQ or COSMIQ+;
  • which hardware generation it is, if you know;
  • whether you still have the old Deepblu app installed;
  • any old APK files, screenshots, manuals or firmware information;
  • what currently works for you with Subsurface or other tools.

This information is useful because the public history of COSMIQ hardware generations is incomplete. Real reports from owners can help preserve that knowledge and improve future compatibility.

Help test Tethys app

I am looking for COSMIQ+ owners who may be willing to help test Tethys app, especially owners of hardware generations other than Gen 4.

You do not need to be a developer. You do not need to understand Bluetooth protocols. Testing with real COSMIQ+ hardware and real Android phones is what matters.

If you contact me, please include as much of this as you can:

  • your COSMIQ or COSMIQ+ model;
  • hardware generation, if known;
  • firmware version shown in Sync Mode;
  • Android phone model;
  • Android version;
  • whether the original Deepblu app still works for you;
  • how you currently download or manage your dive logs.

You can find more information on the COSMIQ+ Support page, or contact me through the Contact page.

So, is COSMIQ+ still usable?

Yes, the COSMIQ+ hardware can still be usable without Deepblu.

What is missing is the original software ecosystem that made the device easy to manage from a phone.

That is the gap Tethys app is trying to fill.

The hardware still works. The software can be rebuilt.
